Eons better than Space Jam, this oft-messy slapsticky comedy only stumbles a bit when the mechanisms of the plot itself get in the way. But it's undeniably great fun, and as with the original Warner Bros. 'toons, works on different levels for both kids and adults. There are some hilarious references among all Daffy and Bugs' wisecracks, some very amusing cameos in an inspired restaurant scene (Shaggy and "Shaggy" for one), Marvin the Martian figures prominently (ooh, makes me very angry), Steve Martin is over-the-top in a way he hasn't been since The Jerk, and Brendan Fraser fits right in among all his animated pals. (Jenna Elfman, in a more thankless role, doesn't quite fit in as well, but tries gamely). Your ability to enjoy the movie may depend on a) your ability to enjoy silly humor and b) your ability to enjoy Daffy Duck, here voiced ably by Joe Alaskey (no Mel Blanc, but fine); some may find his dominance in the movie grating, but I love Daffy, so those people are very wrong and need to go watch Masterpiece Theater
It's all good, slobbery fun -- but what did you expect from Joe Dante, the man who brought us Gremlins, the toon nightmare sequence from the Twilight Zone movie, Innerspace, and Piranha . He keeps things zipping along nicely. Not these characters' finest hour by a longshot, but far better than anything else they've been forced into in recent years. |
