| Originally found this film because of Jon Favreau's "Dinner for Five" on the Independent Film Channel. I wanted to see if this guy could act, so to speak. I liked the trailer, and also I wanted to see Bud Cort again (Harold in "Harold and Maude"). Some stand-outs for me in this film were: 1. Amazing use of dust as a lighting effect (compare with smoke or fog). 2. Darryl Hannah was completely unrecognizable and it wasn't until preparing to review "Big Empty" that I realized she was the bartender, a character I liked. There is something to be said for an actor who can effectively hide her identity. 3. A really good over all feel for the desert location. Maybe there should be an award for "best supporting roll by a dry lake bed". The cast were obviously in it for the fun of making an independent film, being kind of out-there and goofy. The gals were all eye candy in the best possible sense. The guys didn't disappoint either with Favreau, Cort, and Beach all letting their presence shine. Supporting roles were all well done. Cinematography was crisp and creative. Finally, the resourcefulness of the film using lighting, props, and location to suggest big time ("Close Encounters of the Third Kind") happenings on a low budget was refreshing. Very quality piece of work and an amusing tale. Fun. |
