| Whatever else MY FLESH AND BLOOD might be (it's a lot of things: horror film and feel-good weepy are just two)--this documentary about California woman Susan Tom raising a raft of children, each of whom has a major, sometimes terminal, disability--it's a film to make you think, "My own life is incredibly EASY!" In 80 minutes it covers so much and will have you mulling over so many tricky questions (for starters: How many kids is too many? What kind of woman would deliberately incur this situation upon herself and her family? How much pain and misery can a human being manage?) that you will not walk away from it unscathed. Whatever preconceived notions I might have had were effectively knocked apart by sticking with this movie. Ms Tom appears a surprisingly intelligent, thoughtful, contained woman who has a relatively good understanding of herself, what she and her kids need, and what she is able to accomplish. I do still wonder about that "How many is too many" question. But which child (children) would I have left out? I don't know, and I suspect you won't either. Brave this film. It'll knock your socks off, and you'll remember it. |

Okay, the synopsis may not give you an up with people vibe but Susan Tom will. There is so much more to this documentary than an amazing women and 11 handicapped kids.It is the humor within that comes unexpectedly.
Ever felt sorry for yourself? You may never again after witnessing what the KIDS go through. Can't say I'd try breakdancing if I had no legs.. You will laugh, you will cry and if there were t-shirts you would buy them. |
