Synopsis
Director Bent Hamer's comedy drama Salmer Fra Kjøkkenet (Kitchen Stories) is based on the real-life social experiments conducted in Sweden during the 1950s. In the years following WWII, a research institute sets out to modernize the home kitchen by observing a handful of rural Norwegian bachelors. In the small town of Landstad, middle-aged Isak (Joachim Calmeyer) is one such research subject who regrets ever agreeing to participate in the study. Nevertheless, he is observed by Folke (Tomas Norström), and the two develop a strange friendship until the observer becomes sick. This causes a problem with Folke's boss (Reine Brynolfsson) and Isak's friend Grant (Bjørn Floberg). ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

1950s Scandinavia--dry, cold and funny as hell by talltale December 18, 2004 - 9:00 AM PST

Norway's entry into the 2003 Best Foreign Film sweeps, KITCHEN STORIES is a one-of-a-kind comedy that's dry as vermouth and as charming as, well, anything you can imagine. It's low-key (don't expect a Scandinavian Adam Sandler to show up), but what a story! Based on a "scientific experiment" actually conducted jointly by Norway and Sweden back in the 1950s, the subject is single men and how they use their kitchens. That's right. But the way all this is handled is so pure and true that it'll pull you right along for the entire, relatively short ride. There's everything here--voyeurism, jealousy, attempted murder and a very sick horse--all presented in a manner you'll never have encountered. Attention, foreign film freaks: this one's a "must."
