Based on the novel by Charles Frazier, Anthony Minghella's star-studded Cold Mountain is a sweeping tale set in the final days of the American Civil War. Jude Law stars as Inman, a young soldier who, despite an injury, is struggling to make his way home to Cold Mountain, NC, where his beloved Ada (Nicole Kidman) awaits. In Inman's absence, Ada befriends Ruby (Renée Zellweger), who helps her keep up her late father's farm. Meanwhile, in his travels, Inman encounters a menagerie of interesting folks. Also starring Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Donald Sutherland, and Philip Seymore Hoffman, Cold Mountain features original music by Jack White of the White Stripes. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Ever seen The Princess Bride? (you should, it's fun) Well, this one is almost the same film over again... Strip away the giants, the midgets, the fun, turn it into a historical piece, add a dollop of Southpark's mister Mackey's "war is baaad, okay?" and voila!

| It's too bad that they couldn't have shot this movie in North Carolina instead of Rumania--I think it loses something. The supporting actors turn in wonderful performances (Renee Zellweger, Natalie Portman et al) The leading actors left something to be desired, but again it may be because of the way the film was edited. |

| COLD MOUNTAIN is definitely the least of director Anthony Minghella's five films. It's not a bad movie; in fact, it has a number of fine scenes scattered throughout. But watching it too often feels like a chore--and a long one, at that. Renee Zellweger perks things up immensely once she appears, and the supporting cast is good, especially Eileen Atkins. But Jude Law and Nicole Kidman don't connect much (literally or figuratively), and someone should be ashamed of allowing Kidman to look so startlingly "clean" throughout the Civil War. Perhaps the original, longer version will someday surface, and I'll eat my words. Till then, Cold Mountain's a little TOO cold. |
