The team of Alfonso Albacete and David Menkes has made two films that I've seen and both are unique in their exploration of the area where sex, love and gender collide. I WILL SURVIVE, released in 1999, tackles the plight of a gay man terribly attracted to a woman who is equally attracted to him. "I Love You baby," from 2001, addresses the situation of a straight man's sexual involvement with another man. Both films, while full of charm, humor and tenderness, do not shy away from the sadness at the core of their dilemma.

Viewers who see, listen and feel will reap the dividends that this directing duo plants. Watching I WILL SURVIVE, they'll also see two wonderful performances from Emma Suarez and Juan Diego Botto as the lovers--plus an equally fine supporting cast. The characters in this film, full of kindness and grace, never stop trying. That's their cross to bear, but it's also their salvation. Albacete and Menkes make deceptively simple, quiet movies that keep expanding the more you consider them. I'm eager to see their next one, "Entre Vivir Y Sonar," released in 2004 but not yet on video here in the States.
