Synopsis
This historical drama from director Stephen Poliakoff was produced for and originally aired on the BBC. Miranda Richardson and Tom Hollander star as Queen Mary and King George V. After discovering that their son Prince John (Daniel Williams and Matthew Thomas) suffers from epilepsy and learning disabilities, the royals have the boy sent off to be raised in a rural farmhouse, lest he tarnish the family's image of superiority. Removed from the public eye and the attention of his parents, Prince John forms a loving bond with his nurse, Lalla (Gina McKee). ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

It's difficult to watch this young man's family give into shame over his illness and what they take to be his feeble-mindedness. The fine acting doesn't take the easy way out; they're not portrayed as completely heartless, despite their cowardice. But they failed to stand up for their son. Although Nicholas and Alexandra of Russia are only minor figures in the story, I've never seen such a devastating portrayal achieved with such economy. This is not a movie to endear anyone to royalty. At the same time, the depiction of royal splendor is very affecting. It's just that the people caught up in it seem to have had all the life sucked out of them. The "Lost Prince" of the title is idealized as almost the only one among them who manages to remain fully human. Bill Nighy, as usual, steals every scene he is in.
