Synopsis
John Woo directs the sci-fi action thriller Paycheck, based on a story written by Philip K. Dick in 1953. Waking up with his short-term memory erased, engineer Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) learns that he has been doing highly secretive work for the last three years in exchange for billions of dollars. But when he tries to get paid, he finds out that he himself had previously exchanged the money for an envelope of random clues to his life. Chased by an FBI agent (Michael C. Hall) and his old boss Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart), Michael uses the clues to find out his identity and prove his innocence. Uma Thurman appears as his love interest and partner, Rachel. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

I typically hate John Woo films. I think because I'm not a fan of pro wrestling, his trademark "action sequences", smarmy dialog and absurd plot points tend to annoy rather than entertain me. Paycheck, however, was just interesting enough to distract me from the Woo within. There is still a fair amount of cheese throughout, but there was sufficient sci-fi content to carry me through the rough spots. I haven't read the story the movie was based on, so I don't know whether this is a criticism of Dick or the screenwriters, but I found myself wishing more clever things had been done with the contents of the envelope. Also, Uma wasn't looking her best here. (Maybe she'd have noticed that if she had WIPED THE @#$% MIRROR!) If you like sci-fi, this movie is better than The Sixth Day and not as good as Minority Report. If you were going to pass on Paycheck simply because (like me) you now realize every film Ben Affleck has ever done or ever will do is just some variation of Gigli, just squint your eyes and pretend it's Matt Damon.

Science fiction movies which for either budget or artistic choice depict a more technologically laid back future then your typical eye candy Hollywood sci-fi action flick.
