Utterly charming and likeable despite its faults

This completely winning little comedy from Singapore is too hard to dislike, despite some amateurishness and utter predictability. The story, an homage to (parody of, remake of -- you choose) Saturday Night Fever, is made engaging by a cute cast, some great dance scenes, a very sweet-natured disposition and genuine empathy for its characters -- plus some real laugh out loud moments. So much so that you can forgive it for the John Travolta stand-in who sounds more like Elvis (and the Purple Rose of Cairo-ripped off plot device) and the fact that they couldn't get the rights to the original movie or songs (the remakes sound quite authentic though, so who cares). It's such a likeable brew you'd have to be quite a curmudgeon to not find yourself smiling by the time it's over. Also wonderfully interesting to see a movie from Singapore (they speak English in the movie although it's sometimes hard to understand what they're saying -- try using the subtitles feature on occasion). Great fun. Would make a good double-feature with Shall We Dance, if that ever comes out on DVD.
