The Eagle Shooting Heroes (Dong Cheng Xi Jiu) is laugh out loud hilarious. What starts off as an action-packed, wire-fu, Chinese-sword-and-sorcery fantasy flick quickly morphs into an action-packed, wire-fu, Chinese-sword-and-sorcery slapstick romantic comedy filled with love polygons and mistaken identities and gender benders and more silly jokes than you can shake a centipede at. It's like A Midsummer Night's Dream meets Zu Warriors of Magic Mountain by way of Abbott and Costello.
The all-star cast is amazing and obviously having fun. Director Jeff Lau (A Chinese Odyssey, Treasure Hunt) is in his element. Although some of Action Director Sammo Hung's choreography seem pretty standard, the action is non-stop and high quality and there are sublime moments -- I especially like the intricacy of the three-way fight in the alleyway among Jacky Cheung, Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Ka Fai.
If anything, the continual fighting and slapstick can get overwhelming towards the middle of the film just because it keeps building and you wonder when you can take a break. Also, I wonder how much the subtitles miss since there are a handful of spoken sentences that didn't get translated. Well, I still had a lot of fun watching this film. Although you'll probably get more of the parody if you've seen other wu xia flicks, especially Ashes of Time which stars almost the same actors and is a dramatic retelling of the same story, this is still pretty funny on its own.
