I didn't even know I liked Westerns...

As perfect as TV gets. I started watching Deadwood, because I'd just finished watching Joss Whedon's Firefly on DVD and needed a serious fix of the Old West. To be clear, Firefly and Deadwood have almost nothing in common besides great writing.

Firefly has post Civil war America themes and overtones. Deadwood is set squarely in this period, based on an actual town and with characters and exploits based on real people and events. The show is thouroghly researched.

You know how you watch TV and evertything is too clean. New York is all shiny. San Francisco has no bums or hookers. The people are all beautiful and fresh looking. Notin Deadwood. The level of detail and atmosphere in this show is amazing. It's all dirty and grungy and the characters are flawed and complicated and thouroughly engrossing. Even if you aren't a fan of the Western genre, or ESPECIALLY if you're not a fan of the Western genre, but you appreciate great storytelling give Deadwood a try.

One warning, even for an HBO show the amount of profanity used borders on being gratuitous and there's some nudity, but don't let that put you off, its amazing TV.
