Amazingly light on its feet

The year's only half over, but it's unlikely there will be a movie more underrated than THE BIG BOUNCE. No, it's not great, but it's short, sweet and amazingly light on its feet. As easy-going as its lead Owen Wilson, the film has a director (George Armitage) who manages to keep his terrific ensemble of actors on the same charming and loose wave-length--no mean feat, given a cast that veers from Charlie Sheen to Bebe Neuwirth to Morgan Freeman. There are no belly laughs here, just the kind of smart, savvy/silly talk that will keep a sophisticated soul smiling throughout. The film flopped, but it's hard to believe that Elmore Leonard--on whose work it is based--was not a happy camper upon seeing the result (screenplay by Sebastian Gutierrez). The ending, given all that's come before, is just about perfect, bearing out the notion that, "Sometimes, things ARE just as they appear." (Warning: do not, under any circumstances, mix this movie up with the putrid 1969 version starring Ryan O'Neal and Leigh Taylor-Young.)
