| Captures the playful, imaginative spirit of much of Calder's art and the experimental, inventive, fun-loving spirit of the man who created it. The material covering his early and middle years was the best - his wire sculptures are beautiful and whimsical, and his mobiles are sublimely lovely. The documentary is less interesting when it gets to the end of Calder's career, when he created his gigantic, much copied (by those with lesser gifts!) metal sculptures. In Calder's hands, these pieces work, but Calder imitators have churned out armies of big, blocky, metal "corporate art" constructions (often they are red or black) that get plunked outside of big, impersonal office buildings, in the middle of some sterile "plaza" few people ever sit in. I would have enjoyed a bit of commentary on this - I doubt Calder would have approved! But the film doesn't bring this topic up. Overall, though, it's a great documentary, especially if you love Calder's work as much as I do. |
