Dare I admit this -- I actually liked this sick, disturbing, campy, softcore sex and rape filled, bloody, violent, action oriented, gun blazing and everything exploding thriller of a "classic" anime.
Sure, the animation technique is old and the story premise is common. The characters could be more developed. Some of the imagery might be considered subtle parody or direct ripoffs, depending on your generosity. And the ending is typically melodramatic.
But, my gosh, there are moments of horrific inspiration. I mean, what's up with that spider woman with those things in her... and that other woman who... er, I'd better keep this review rated PG. Let me say that I don't like film that pigeon hole women as sexual victims, and unfortunately many violent anime do just that. However, Wicked City allows women to be aggressors as well. Yeah, it's still sick but at least there 's gender equality in that sickness.
This is simply director Yoshiaki Kawajiri at his best. Ninja Scroll may have more innovatively violent demons, but Wicked City has the more innovatively sexual ones. The fighting and chase scenes are intense in both. Biohunter doesn't come close in creativity. And Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is excellent but on a different scale: much tamer with stronger characterization and plot.
