Synopsis
Few TV-listing services could print the actual title of this irreverent weekly pay-cable series without incurring the wrath of bluenoses and angry parents. Thus, the series was referred to as Penn & Teller: Bull----! -- and, in those instances when even those blank spaces were too explicit, the program was retitled Penn & Teller: BS. By any name, the program was a vehicle for the "gonzo" comedy-magic team of Penn Jillette (the one who talked) and Teller (the one who didn't). Claiming they could smell frauds, phonies, and mountebanks "from miles away," the dauntless duo successfully exposed the flim-flammery behind TV psychics, bogus scientific investigations, and trendy cult movements. The series made its first Showtime Network appearance on January 24, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Disc One contains episodes 1-5:

  • Talking to the Dead
  • Alternative Medicine
  • Alien Abductions

The language used is strong. Luckily Penn warns you about this up front. They never call anyone "liars" or "cheats" instead referring to them as "Mother F******" and "A******"

First Penn opens up with a segment on mediums such as John Edward, Rosemary Altea, and a few others who claim to be able to talk to the dead. He explains the common tricks (cold & warn readings) and the way these mediums take advantage of the video editing room to make themselves look better.

Later Penn talks about 'Alternative Medicine,' I really enjoyed the things he said about chiropractors and it's origins. It was really hilarious when Penn & teller make up their own new age treatments and test them at a local mall. I almost fell out of my chair laughing during the Snail Mask bit.

Pen also pokes fun at alien abductions, end of the world theorists, and my personal favorite was the episode about second hand smoke & the baby Mozart effect gimmick. I never knew that the person who did the study on the Mozart effect actually conducted the study on adults & not babies. This episode was definitely the most educating.

Overall I give this video an 8. I would have gave this video a 10, however I really wish Penn & Teller would have gone much more in depth in the issues and presented more facts. The shows really needed to be an hour long each, but to Penns credit he did a good job with the time he had.

Holy sh*t, this is the funniest fu*king thing I've seen in a long time. Nothing gives me a good gut laugh like watching a bunch of stupid fu*king people convince themselves of their delusions of granduer. But, hey man, whatever gets you through the day. For me, it's getting stoned and watching people make a**es out of themselves. When you stop and think about it, it's all bulls*it in the end. - 5 Leaves

Comedy for those with a twisted sense of humor (or a primer thereof).
