Synopsis
A dedicated young German boy pulls off an elaborate scheme to keep his mother in good health in this comedy drama from director Wolfgang Becker. Suffering a heart attack and falling into a coma after seeing her son arrested during a protest, Alex's (Daniel Brühl) socialist mother, Christiane (Katrin Sass), remains comatose through the fall of the Berlin wall and the German Democratic Republic. Knowing that the slightest shock could prove fatal upon his mother's awakening, Alex strives to keep the fall of the GDR a secret for as long as possible. Keeping their apartment firmly rooted in the past, Alex's scheme works for a while, but it's not long before his mother is feeling better and ready to get up and around again. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

GOOD BYE LENIN! is a great film. That it was not nominated and did not walk away with last year's Best Foreign Film award is beyond belief. What sounds like a situation comedy becomes--in the hands of the writer, director and cast--the rare film that seamlessly joins the political to the personal. It will add to your appreciation if you have some sense of German history, but the heart of this movie goes beyond a specific country and its borders. Anyone who's experienced familial love and duty will respond to the film, while those with an understanding of history will simply marvel at this "dream" of what socialism might have become. If I were rich, I'd buy a copy of GOOD BYE LENIN! for everyone I know and care about. For now, this recommendation will have to do.

Definitely an eye opener. Could a communist possibly have so much love for his mother that he'd go to the extreme of creating a different world around her whole bedroom sphere? Definitely entertaining, no matter what your political beliefs are.

In my narrow, Western view, I couldn't imagine anyone would be sad to see the fall of Communism. However, this movie educated me. Whatever you're used to becomes the way things should be.
