The Dreamers doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up. Not quite allegory, or retrospective, or homage to old films. Pretention to sexuality but not going anywhere; just a 2 hour diversion.
It does get points for male nudity - the last bastion of censorship; but what's with Michael Pitt? Too shy to get real with Eva and Louis? |

| This is a unique film. Just like the saying "Be careful what you wish for" this is "Be careful what you watch." It is a highly controversal film, but its unique even if the plot is somewhat simplistic and lame. |

oy, sadly, this movie is a major dissapointment. You think: Bertolucci, Cinephelia, Paris 68, Sex,= Magic. But you are wrong. There are some pretty parts of this film. THe female lead is very attractive, and you see some rare up-close male frontal nudity. Also there is a very pretty scene where the girl's hair catches on fire. Outside of that, the characters don't come of as very realistic, but rather kind of dumb and pretentious. I find it hard to imagine that people who could be so taken by such intellectual films and books would be so un-self conscious. Watcing this movie was like reading a social history of the time in the worst way. It was like every character was just representaive of various politial and social trends and acted as mouthpieces for really obvious non-nuanced opinions. If you want to see some Bertolucci see "the spider's strategem" "Before the Revolution" "last Tango in Paris" of "the last emperor" and maybe some day the evil people at paramount will put "the conformist" on DVD. WHen!!!!! |

I have just seen the best film of the year. "The Dreamers" is everything a film should be and more. It is bold, it is fearless and it strikes every thought provoking emotion one could muster. With a simple cast of three, we follow the threesome (two of which are twins) through sex, drugs, rock and roll and "politics".
The canvas is set in France, 1968, the film movement is growing and people who crave art are in revolt. Demonstrations are crowding the streets and Universaties of a beautiful city. While an American traveler, played wonderfully by Michael Pitt, is awe struck and obsessed with images that pierce through his eyes, into his mind and straight to his heart. There isn't a thing he doesn't know about film and he craves more.
When he happens to come across a sister and brother who both have tasted the forbidden and unspoken fruit of incest. He can't help but fall in love. While all the world is fighting in Vietnam the three are cooped up in the twin's parent's apartment for a month, they don't leave. Instead they discuss philosophy, film and engage in some rather explicit sexual activity.
There is one moment where a dare is made between sister and brother. He's asked to guess the name of a film and he loses. His unfortunate loss requires him to masturbate in front of his new found American friend and sister. Yet remarkably, it's not shocking, it's something cinephiles have been waiting for since Peter Greenaway gave us the quirky "The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and His Lover", yet, this makes sense and it serves a purpose. While "Thief" was just a bunch of neat images about rich people.
All the while you'll be asking yourself, how the hell are they going to end this film? I promise you, you'll be satisfied.
This one's on my top ten, rent this film and just watch it without dissection. Take it in for what it is, your not watching a movie, your watching a new piece of cinema history.
The disc includes a fantastic documentary from the BBC on director Bertolucci as well as some other treats, watch the doc. It's worth it. Highly reccomended. If I said anything else, I'd give it all away. |
