I have to say, Ai Tenshi Densetsu is one of my all-time favorite Magical Girl anime. One of the first anime to be inspired by Sailor Moon's "sentai mahou shoujo" model, Wedding Peach got all the bad rap for being a rip-off, while shows that were just as bad or worse that came later (read: Tokyo Mew Mew) suffered no tarnished reputation.
And it is true that Wedding Peach shares many similarities with its contemporary. But Wedding Peach trumps its competition by improving on the model. The focus on three (later four) main characters instead of five allowed for a strong interconnection between the characters that, although certainly present in Sailor Moon, never feels quite as strong.
Moreover, for those of you who loved Sailor Moon for its romance, Wedding Peach easily trumps its competition. Although the romance between Serenity and Endymion is certainly touching, Momoko and Yousuke's relationship struck a stronger chord with me because it was developed over a longer period of time. The Serenity/Endymion relationship draws most of its fire from events that occured previous to the series' timeline; Wedding Peach doesn't suffer Sailor Moon's weakness of providing most of the romance's basis before the show even begins.
Plot-wise, although Sailor Moon revolutionzed the genre of magical girl more with its basic set-up, Wedding Peach will deliver far more surprises, twists and turns. For this reason, it stays intensely engaging. And whereas in Sailor Moon good and evil always seem to be defined very much in black and white (especially in the anime) Wedding Peach shows startling shades of gray for a children's show.
Finally, Wedding Peach just outshines Sailor Moon in terms of animation quality. Wedding Peach's vibrant colors aside, Sailor Moon often suffered from very inconsistent-looking animation, more so than any anime I have ever watched. No such problems in this show; moreover, for a magical girl show of the 1990's, the budget is remarkably high--and the animation reflects this. |
