This 75th anniversary DVD collection presents Popeye along with Olive Oyl, Sweet Pea, Wimpy, and the dastardly Bluto in a total of 86 classic episodes spanning more than eight hours. First a warning:
I have only seen the first disk in this collection.
Virtually every cartoon on this disc is from 1965 or '66, a real low-point in the history of Popeye cartoons, when the baby was cheerily tossed out with the bath-water. These are so poor that my guess would be that some slick willie got the rights to the bottom of the barrel for nothing and so put out a "collection" that includes nothign classic, and more importantly, nothing worth watching except possibly for its nostalgia value to some.
All the witty grumbling monologue that made old Popeye cartoons worthwhile is absent, replaced with a white-washed and self-evident sort of explanatory conversation buttressing carelessly drawn, basically un-edited storylines so dull that my 4-year-old asked me to turn it off. The animation is wooden and the dialog idiotic and careless, whith the quality of the reading one of the lowest I have seen in published cartooning - there are palpable stumbles and incorrect pauses all over.
I am a big fan of Max Fleischer Popeye cartoons, and somehow the "Collector's Edition" label made me think there would be something of interest there, but it's actually a collection of the blandest, poorest Popeye cartoons, made on a small screen the-sponsors-aren't-watching sort of budget.
If you like max Fleischer's Popeye, best look elsewhere! |
