White Dog (1982)

Cast: Kristy McNichol
Director: Samuel Fuller
    see all cast/crew...
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 84 min.

Julie Sawyer (Kristy McNichol) hits a white dog with her car and then nurses it back to health. One day, the seemingly mild-mannered dog saves her life by viciously attacking a rapist who breaks into her home. Eventually, Julie discovers the dog has been trained to attack black skin on sight. Director Sam Fuller, known mainly for his lurid pulp noir films, has made many controversial films before, but this one frightened studio executives so strongly, they demanded the film be cut or repressed. Fuller then cut all ties with Hollywood and took his film to Europe where it was hailed by critics as a visionary and revolutionary take on racism and received by audiences with open arms. The film has still never seen the light of day in the US and Fuller never made another film in the United States again.

This title is only legitimately available as a DVD-R. Unfortunately, some older DVD players are unable to play this disc. If (or when) another version becomes available, we will replace all copies of the film at that time.

Interesting but overrated. by jetmorgan October 30, 2005 - 12:44 PM PST

Hard to believe this was so extreme that studio executives refused to release it for that reason. I'm more inclined to believe that they refused to release it because it's not a very good movie. The idea is interesting but certainly not extreme for 1982 and the excution seems rather amateurish, particularly for someone like Fuller. The acting is mostly mediocre and the choice of Burl Ives in a key role was a bad move as he is extremely unconvincing. I might have a different opinion if I could see a better quality print but I doubt it.

This title is currently unavailable on disc or is no longer in-print.

why do we do this?
