Absolut Warhola traces famous pop icon Andy Warhol's family tree to two separate European villages where his ancestors still praise the American artist that they never met. With a witty style, German filmmaker Stanislaw Mucha captures these villagers unique lifestyle as they still to this day do not comprehend their strange relative who often sent them his prized work only for them to end up as children's play toys or makeshift clothing. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

I watched this with a friend, not knowing what to expect, and laughed the whole time. This documentary is only nominally about Andy Warhol - the real purpose is to have show how people who live in small Slovak villages are a bunch of rubes. Actually through a friend I've spent some time in small Slovak villages, and they pretty much captured this American's cultural shock - it is indeed a very different way of living, and you do notice it in the character of the people.
There's no question it's condescending in concept, but it's not mean-spirited in execution, and the cast of characters are more humorously eccentric and likable than NBC's entire Thursday lineup put together. Also, it's interesting to see elements of Warhol in his relatives - some are dead ringers, some also have artistic talents. As an aside, his grand-niece is maybe the most attractive woman ever (although she doesn't make much of an appearance in the movie, unfortunately).
So don't expect much enlightenment on the world of Pop Art, but if you've an interest on the Trivia of Andy Warhol's life, or if you enjoy eccentric country bumpkins (imagine a comedy from England), I'd recommend this documentary. |
