The fans demanded it, and so it has come. Freaks and Geeks, the Emmy award-winning series about the trials and tribulations of outsiders in 1980 Michigan is finally available on DVD in its original form, with all its original music. A comedy/drama for rockers, geeks, burn-outs, and nerds!
I know- 10. Really? Yes, really. This show changed my thoughts about TV writing. It's a comical, touching and cool look into two diverse groups of misfits- the "Freaks" and the "Geeks".
You will recognize many of the freaks (James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Jason Segel) who have since moved on to more lucrative acting careers. Some notable episodes deal with transgender characters, abusive parents and of course- drugs and sex!
The younger geeks plotlines revolve around defending their frail bodies and reputations against bullies, spinning the proverbial bottle, dealing with cheating parents and ventriloquist dummies.
I can't say enough good things- unlike the other review, I was hooked since disk one. Give it a chance-if not for the nostalgic music, then for the quality of young actors. |

From the short description I was expecting a mockumentary, or something at least as edgy as Degrassi Jr. High. Freaks and Geeks is cute and a bit funny, and does bring back memories (although I was just in grade school in 1980), but after watching the first disc, I wasn't drawn in.
I found the characters and stories too predictable. Ultimately, it came off as a feel-good puff piece. I'm not sure I get the attraction, but I don't doubt that a lot of people will mark this review as unhelpful. |
