Mel Gibson's well-publicized production The Passion of the Christ concerns the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The dialogue is spoken in the ancient Aramaic language, along with Latin and Hebrew. In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus (James Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello). Jesus is condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing. The roaring crowd demand his death, so Pilate orders his crucifixion. Jesus is severely beaten and made to carry his cross up to Golgotha, the hill outside Jerusalem, where he is nailed to the cross. Romanian theatrical actress Maia Morgenstern plays Mary, Mother of God, and Italian superstar Monica Bellucci plays Mary Magdalene. Amid much controversy involving Gibson and various religious organizations, The Passion of the Christ received an international theatrical release in February of 2004. In March 2005, Gibson released an unrated version of the film, dubbed The Passion Recut, that eliminated five to six minutes of the more graphic scenes of flogging and crucifixion. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

| I was expecting to really love this movie and be moved, but it was just horrible. Bad acting, bad script, bad cinematography- it was just horrible. James Caviezel was actually pretty good but he had nothing to work with. This came across as very amateurish. I now understand why many Jewish people were offended- Gibson makes it look like the Romans were trying to protect Jesus from the evil corrupt Rabbis of Jerusalem. A wasted effort! |

| Removed this from my list because I saw it at a street sale and at five dollars bought it. Neither Catholic nor religious, I viewed this film with the eyes of one who needed to keep a finger on the Fast Forward button and I pressed it a lot. I have to say I love a parable with moral content and I looked futilely for one in this tale with its gloriously magical cinemagraphy tale. The movie has Christ beaten nonstop from beginning to end. The soldierly beaters wear themselves out yet never lack for glee in doing it. Blood gets splattered everywhere as Christ gets flayed and filleted like a bad steak, literally has the skin stripped off his naked body (which for that of a carpenter lacked requisite muscle). The sadomasochism seems the kind of thing only a devout Catholic could love. I once bought an antique cross with a Jesus crucifixion and returned it due to the seemingly needless blood dripping that the "artist" had painted over it. The relentless bleeding across my tv screen seemed a bit much for storytelling and my stomach. An outrageous amount of time seemed devoted to making truly hateful the Jewish priests or rabbis. Jesus constantly looked at the heavens and spoke lines that neither moved nor informed. I have to rate this halfway for the halfassed effort in telling one of the most remarkable stories in Christiandom with such narrow vision. |
