Kultur's Artists of the 20th Century series presents in-depth discussions of both the notable works of and the lives of some of the most acclaimed figures of the art world. Belgian painter René Magritte is the focus of this entry. One of the key proponents of the magical realism style, Magritte's dreamlike works were known for being both surreal and lifelike at the same time. Other episodes in the series include Artists of the 20th Century: Andy Warhol, Artists of the 20th Century: Henri Matisse, and Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

| This is a hard one to rate. The narration was not good--I want to hear about the artist's life and his thoughts on his own paintings, not the pedestrian banter of an art wank. On the other hand, we really enjoyed just going through the work, and this was an excellent overview. |

| I couldn't even finish watching this - almost the entire film is the narrator saying "The Escape, 1926. Les ammants, 1954." Just the title and date, over and over again, with occasional fatuous comments about the shading or lack of expressivity. Yawn. |
