| LATTER DAYS appears to be one of the more popular gay films of the past few years. But it does not strike me as the piece of 8-to-10-star material that other members seem to rate it. It does offer a pair of lovely, deeply-felt performances from its attractive leading men and from certain supporting cast members (others performances are not so hot, particularly those of the supposedly "straight" Mormons). While some of the dialog is quite good, other portions are filled with clunky exposition and obvious metaphor. And the road to the inevitable happy ending has too many unbelievable bumps, as is often the case with gay films. All told, for a gay movie, LATTER DAYS does rank a little higher than most. In general, I find that TLA (the releasing company here) ranks above WOLFE but below STRAND in terms of intelligent films for gays. |
