First off, there's the teacher herself. A bit of an airhead, she may have graduated from high school, but she sure hasn't left. And with the arrival of not one, but two transfer students - one ten-year-old prodigy and one space cadet - it's going to be an interesting year.
It's going to be a full year, too. Between handling enormous assignments, dodging murderous volleyballs, and enduring endless rivalries, summer vacation should serve as a welcome break for the weary student - unless your teachers come with you!

I don't know what it is about the previews ADV does, but they always seem to mislead me. I had avoided watching this because I thought it looked too silly...on par with Excel Saga. Thankfully the pickings were really bad at the local rental place and I was "forced" to watch this. While I can't call the show serious, it is at least firmly grounded in reality.
Explaining why this show is the best I've seen this year is difficult. It's a show that becomes more than its parts. The plot is really about nothing, yet it works really well for the cast. The characters are all based upon stereotypes, but yet they find a way to become unique. It's definetly cute, and certainly the funniest anime I've seen. When the end comes you'll be sad that the ride is over. It might also have a lot to do with Osaka. You can't help but love Osaka.
I found the dub very entertaining (Kira does a great job with Osaka). I can't say if its accurate or not because I never felt the need to try the sub. |

From the high-energy opening theme song and animation, you know you're in for something different.
This show takes a number of stock anime characterizations (there's the chibi (cute) girl, the "smart" girl, the athletic girl, the girl who's mentally just slightly out-of-phase with the others, the hyper "achiever", the girl who's a bit more physically developed, and the shy girl who's infatuated with that one) and throws them all together into a soup that turns out to be quite tasty.
Like Seinfeld, this is also a show about "nothing", but it succeeds because of the detail it goes into in uncovering and examining the quirks the girls reveal as they explore themselves and their relationships with each other through such innocuous plotlines as hiccups, petting a cat, winning a footrace, the origin of pigtails, et cetera. Those quirks get taken to the extreme, with often hilarious results. Even the friendly competition between the girls' homeroom teacher and their gym teacher takes a number of wild and crazy turns, as the characters give voice and then action to those monologues in their heads that most would silently agree with but then resignedly ignore out of convention.
Just when you think you have this show categorized as a warm and fuzzy, often wacky slice-of-life kind of dramedy however, they spring Mr. Kimura on you. I won't begin to attempt a description of this character, because words will not do him justice. You simply have to see him to believe him.
This is a very good show. The music supports the action without overwhelming it, but the ending theme is very special. The animation is clean and the artwork is quite good. The character design is somewhat simple, but the meat of this show is in the dialog; they could have animated stick figures and would have lost little of the show's impact. The English dub is good, however the Japanese sub is outstanding. Not much fan-service, just some swimsuit shots, and... Mr. Kimura.

OK, I admit I've already seen the fansub for this, and can't comment on any of the dub-work, but since I'm a subtitle-only person anyway, it doesn't matter.
The lives of high school students when caricature characters all share the same homeroom makes for some very interesting and funny times. There isn't really any skin or fanservice, but it isn't needed. The good part is, there is both a plot-driven component and a character driven component, and it is blended quite well. The quirky characters may not be especially endearing unless you are already into anime, but for those who can allow them to sink in, they are great.
