| THE GIRL OF YOUR DREAMS was never given a release here in the States, but it ought to have been. Its director Fernando Trueba won a Best Foreign Film Academy Award years ago for his pleasant "Belle Epoque" and has continued making interesting and pleasant movies since then. This latest is one of his best and give Penelope Cruz the chance to show her chops, along with a first-rate cast that includes Antonio Resines, Rosa Maria Sarda, Jorge Sanz and Fassbinder's own Hannah Schygulla. The scene is set in the late 30s when Spain was fighting its Civil War and Germany under Hitler was coalescing against the Jews and the rest of the world. A group of Spanish actors is making a film in Germany, during which the usual egos will flare, but in the midst of all the politics and fear, everything takes on more meaning and immediacy. "The Girl of Your Dreams" moves a bit slowly at times alternating between farce and melodrama, but it's packed with so much content and fun that I suspect you won't mind at all. And for those who love movies about making movies, this one's a feast. |
