| As a "family" film (and by that I mean a film about families--not the usual Hollywood twaddle that becomes a family film simply by ruling out any sex or foul language), BROKEN WINGS is impressive. It tosses you into the midst of an Israeli family about to go into crisis mode. As my partner pointed out immediately after our viewing, this could have been a family in any western country--which makes it pretty unusual, given the more overtly political nature of many Israeli films that reach our shores. It is superbly acted and written, with every character expertly delineated. I unhesitatingly recommend this one, especially to foreign film buffs who enjoy experiencing how lives are lived abroad. The only thing that keeps it from being an even better movie is some unfortunate predictability as it draws to a close. Otherwise, BROKEN WINGS is utterly enjoyable: moving, funny and real. |
