Synopsis
Many people have searched for it, many have stolen it, and many will kill for it. The Gad is a seemingly magical stone which, once making a strong spiritual connection with someone, will grow into a very powerful robot known as a Techode - a mechanical being that embodies the will of the bonded person. This is the story of Hajiki Sanada, a boy struggling to help support his fatherless family in an electricity-impoverished city known as Night Town. One day he encounters the Gad and a special bond is formed. Now his life will never be the same...

This review covers the first disk; the others haven't come out as of this writing. There's nothing new about "Gadguard," nor does there need to be. We have seen a number of more 'mature' Giant Robot anime in recent years, which attempted to treat the robot as a metaphor for the existential condition of its driver, or some such darn thing. What all those shows lack is the uncomplicated, passionate adolescent love between the robot and its pilot, which was always the driving force behind this genre. Well, that love reappears in "Gadguard" and it's very refreshing. Hajiki falls in love with Lightning the moment they meet, and the same is true for all the other pilots and their techodes. This simple, charming, well-made show is fun in ways that more complicated and 'difficult' anime sometimes lack. I'm waiting for it to get darker and more serious as it goes along -- this kind of show usually does -- but I expect it to be an enjoyable ride.

The animation is well done by Gonzo Digimation, which seems to be singlehandedly proving how cool computer animation can be. The show is rated 13-up, presumably for violence, 'adult' themes and four-letter words, though these episodes held no particularly shocking surprises. I look forward to more of this show.
