| My 16 year old daughter and I watched this together. Some of the animations are really funny. We loved "The Cat Came Back" it was great! I liked "The Sweater" which is about the humiliation of being a kid who wants to be like everyone else, but his mother is uncooperative. We can all relate to that! Most of the other animations weren't written to be funny. Quite a few drama cartoons and a few artistic animations. The last one is one of the first computer generated animations. |

| If you haven't seen some of these animations before, you'll be amazed. Scratching and painting directly onto film and using a pinboard as a canvas, these are two innovative animation styles made famous by Canadian animators. For the Canadians in the crowd there are a few memorable hits, particularly The Cat Came Back and The Log Driver's Waltz. The only animation I didn't care for was Pas de Deux; it was more of a live-action filming effect than animation style, and it seemed to drag on (it was the only one I fast-forwarded through). The lone computer animation is dated by today's standards, but you have to remember that it came out ten years ago. Leonard Maltin provides background information that only helps to add to the allure of the shorts. All in all, a fine cross-section of animation styles produced by the National Film Board of Canada, and a collection that I recommend any fan of animation -- no, any fan of film -- watch. |
