It features interviews with the writer's grandson, Merlin Holland and Lady Alice Douglas, great grand-niece to his lover. Disc Two:
AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1969). Director Rudolph Cartier's adaptation is largely faithful to Wilde, adroitly mixing the darkness and humour which infuse this classic play. The topics examined have a startlingly contemporary feel to them: marital mishaps, public relations and political chicanery, all underpinned by some delicious dialogue. The cast includes Jeremy Brett, Susan Hampshire, and Margaret Leighton.
Lady Windermere's Fan (1925). In 1892 Wilde scored his first major stage success with this ambitious play which revolves around jealousy, suspected infidelity and, of course, social intrigue. The wit and irony is classic Wilde but this is a warmer tale than most, with a humanist message at its heart. Directed with the trademark touch of Ernst Lubitsch.
