Well, it wasn't very cultural, and it wasn't very catty, and it wasn't very engaging. Four of us gathered to watch it. Three of us were so bored as to give up after the first episode. The fourth was only six months old, and didn't really care much one way or another. The characters aren't interesting or plausible or astounding or anything: they're stock anime characters, done without inspiration. Nuku Nuku isn't very catlike: she's A-Ko, except that she's bland and likes fish.
Still, it's got a good title. And one of the people who saw it wants to do the parody, "All Purpose Cultural Fish Girl Fugu Fugu". |
| Custody battle can be great fun

Forget about saving the world from alien invaders, demon beasts or even Angels. The premise of this series is something far more typical: a custody battle over a little boy. However, as the father is a genius scientist who invented a super android (Nuku Nuku), and the mother is the president of a heavy industries company with war planes and giant robots at her disposal, this castody battle is anything but typical.
"All Mighty Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku" is one truly wacky and hilarious comedy in the same style as "Project A-ko". Everything is greatly exaggerated in the story, from characters' facial expressions to fight scenes. We see rockets shooting through school buildings, fireball destroying several city blocks, but nobody ever get hurt... at least not too badly.
The main character, Nuku Nuku, is a super adroid having the body of a busty 16-year-old girl, but with the brain of a cat. Much of the charm of the story comes from Nuku Nuku's naiveness as a human, and her occassional behavorial as a cat. Unlike a lot of imitation android-girl series that followed, this series is done in good taste without relying on excessive fan-service. In fact, it often make fun of man behaving stupidly in the presence of Nuku Nuku instead.
The series was first released in 1992, but you'll not see any signs of dated graphics here. The video quality is colorful and sharp, with beautifully drawn water-color style background (instead of cheap computer-generated graphics found in most recent animes).
Finally, the voice of Nuku Nuku is done by the All Mighty Megumi Hayashibara, so be sure to listen to the Japanese soundtrack - it adds a lot of cuteness to the character.
