Red Dwarf: Series 1 (1988)
This DVD features the first season of the British television series Red Dwarf, a satiric sci-fi comedy in which Lister (Craig Charles) awakens after three million years in hibernation to find himself the last human being in the universe, and trapped aboard the spaceship "Red Dwarf" with a motley collection of aliens and robots. In the first episode, cleverly entitled "The End," Lister discovers he's alive after three million years, and that several surprises await him. His roommate, Rimmer (Chris Barrie), has been holographically preserved to keep him company (unfortunately, he's the most annoying person Lister ever met), and one of his crewmates (Danny John-Jules) appears to have evolved from Lister's pet cat. In "Future Echoes," the Red Dwarf exceeds the speed of light and the crew find themselves moving fast enough to witness their own future, which proves disorienting at best and annoying at worst. And in "Balance of Power," an argument between Lister and Rimmer causes Lister to study to become the Red Dwarf's chef -- which means he would finally outrank Rimmer, and be able to use the ship's equipment to holographically recreate his beloved Christine Kochanski. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
