Synopsis
The characters from the TV series Love Hina have a feature-length adventure in this film which takes place in the spring, around the middle of the series. We find Keitaro sitting down to take the long-awaited entrance exams once again, only to daydream about Narusegawa when he should be working. Devastated with what he's done, he flees the room as soon as the test is over, and then proceeds to flee his home at the Hinata Apartments out of shame. Narusegawa pretends to be unconcerned with his disappearance but is secretly coming apart at the seams with worry. She tracks him down to an island where, thinking he'll never see the old gang again, he is cozying up to a sweet girl named Nyamo with great trepidation. Before things go anywhere, however, his house mates arrive to bring him back home, leaving him, Narusegawa, and Nyamo all confused about what lies in store for them romantically. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

I love the anime Love Hina. It is a funny story of love. But this was way too predictable. The Christmas movie is better IMO. But seeing as there will not be any more, it is worth renting.

manga volume 8 at warp crap speed by CarpeNoctem April 3, 2004 - 8:01 PM PST

DON'T listen to anyone who tells you this movie was good in the least. I read the only review on this and almost died from laughter, and then from despair. Its that bad and has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Let me explain here for you. This movie is based on the manga volume 8 of Love hina by Ken Akamatsu (blessed be thy name). However, and this is crucial, it is vol 8 crammed into 60 min. You can't crunch an entire manga vol into one 60 min movie! and this is the proof. The ensuing destruction of the plot commences therein. The plot synopsis is correct Naru and Keitaro finish their Tokyo U tests and Keitaro takes off believing that he has failed before the results are released. However all of the story is rushed beyond all belief because they try to put it all in such a short time, character interactions that are in the manga are totally passed up, tensions, romances, and crucial developments in the characters are put on the executioners block so that the story can be finished in this short of a time. I can't emphasize the massive cutting in the plot done in this movie enough. Also i don't know how anyone couldn't have noticed this but the animation is also sub Love Hina par on this. In short i have given a new name to this movie; That-movie-who-must-not-be-named. That-movie-who-must-not-be-named is not a movie, it is a torture device. Those who survive this movie (like me) have to live to tell of its horror.. If we are lucky, some of us go into denial and think it was a half decent movie (sob). The word "rape" actually comes from the latin roots of ra- and -pe which literraly mean "to watch the love Hina spring break movie". The devastaion of plot is beyond all reckoning. In the words of my idol Motoko, "How dare you lay your villainous hands upon the innocent citizens of this proud nation. Pond scum would recoil in shame to call you cousin!!". My friends, fear That-movie-who-must-not-be-named, leave it and read vol 8 of the love hina manga at borders or anywhere you can find it and skip this movie. You have been warned.

If you're a serious Love Hina fan then you have to see the Spring Movie just like all the episodes. You really need to have seen the series or at least most of it for this "movie" to make any sense. It was really a TV special that continues the story after the Xmas Special and not a true movie production so the quality seemed the same as for the regular episodes. It started pretty well and there were some good moments scattered around. I liked some of the goofy ideas - always enjoy when Kaolla runs amok with turtles. I only wish they had invested a bit more time in them. The primary theme is the continuation of the overarching relationship between Naru and Keitaro and their quest to get into Tokyo U together. Shinobu's affection for Keitaro and her personal maturation is also a key theme. Everyone else is secondary in this show though they add some funny moments. I would have liked to see them add more tension between Naru, Shinobu and the new character Nyamo. The story seemed choppy and the silly stuff seemed to overwhelm the plot. They had a fun cameo appearance but then didn't have much fun with it. I think they needed another 30 minutes to flesh things out better and take advantage of the opportunity to deliver some nice relationship moments - there were some but they weren't actualized as well as I was expecting. Watch the closing credits as the biggest relationship moment for Keitaro and Naru in the Spring Special is actually embedded there. The Xmas Special benefited from less extraneous stuff and more time spent on developing the core story to provide a richer and more interesting result. As it is, the Spring Special was okay as an extended episode but not very special. Some misc details: I'd give it a G to PG rating - maybe PG rating for some adult themes but pretty mild. No nudity, no serious violence (a Naru punch and some turtle battles) and only a limited amount of alcohol use. Some preposterous Naru jiggling in a homemade swimsuit and wet t-shirt and a couple of "oops I tripped" gropes but other than that there was very little fan service (not that any more was needed either). In sum I'd rank the three "movies" in the following order: 1) Xmas Special, 2) Love Hina Again, 3)Spring Special. I'd also put the Spring Special below most of the series discs.
