The second half is actually not bad -- quite funny and even touching. And the final line is absolutely classic.
But to get there, you have to endure a first half that's surprisingly ineffective. The characters and writing are awfully trite. In some cases, that's on purpose (the father/son parallel with Vader/Luke for instance) but that doesn't help the references feel fresh. It's like you're watching someone's high-school film project.
They also got caught in the middle regarding geek culture. The references don't ring true, and yet are too geeky for a mainstream audience. The real problem, though, is the complacency of the first half. |
