The American Future: A History (Disc 1 of 2) (2008)
The votes in the 2008 presidential election have been cast, and as the citizens of the United States struggle to remain optimistic in the wake of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Enron, and Baghdad, cultural critic Simon Schama explores America's frustrating attempts to come to terms with its own limits. At the dawn of the 21st Century, military woes and domestic anxieties were growing. In order to gain a greater understanding of the present situation, the filmmakers behind The American Future: A History, take a compelling look into our nation's past. Perhaps by finding contemporary counterparts such legendary historical figures as Henry Ford, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, and General Lucius Clay and revisiting crucial moments in American history, we can gain a glimpse into our nation's potential future. At the moment of truth, perhaps our best hope is to take a cue from the history books and consider the wisdom of our forefathers. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The American Future: A History (Disc 2 of 2) (2008)
The buildup to the 2008 U.S. presidential election provides the backdrop for this BBC documentary that finds America at a crossroads. The Iraq War, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Enron scandal have tested the way Americans see themselves--and how the world sees them. Historian Simon Schama hosts this perceptive program that looks to the important events and defining figures of America's past, along with the everyday people of its present, to help divine it's possible future. Included here are all four parts of the series, each of which examine the country's most pressing issues: "What is an American?" which looks at immigration; "American War," about the role of U.S. military power; "American Fervour," which examines the country's religious traditions; and "American Plenty," a look its culture of optimism and abundance.
