Young co-ed Scotty (Rebecca Balding The Boogens) is unable to find housing on the campus.She finds a vacancy at the Engels' mansion, now a boarding house for college students.Mrs. Engels (Yvonne De Carlo, TV's The Munsters) and her son seem nice enough, but it becomes clear to Scotty that something is not right at her new residence.When her fellow borders begin dying, two detectives (Cameron Mitchell Toolbox Murders and comedian Avery Schreiber, in a serious role) must solve the mystery of the Engels' boarding house before the body count rises. | The Silent Scream came along only a little later than "Halloween" in defining the teenage slasher flick as a horror film subgenre. While not as effective as "Halloween", this classic is far better than most of the teen slasher films that came along later. If you watch this sort of movie to see preposterous murder methods and massive gore, you'll be disappointed by the straightforward knifings and shootings and the limited amount of blood. But the acting in The Silent Scream ranges from good (Balding) to excellent (Steele and Reardon). Barbara Steele hasn't a single line of dialogue, but she uses body language and her expressive eyes to create an unnerving and believably psychotic character. Reardon manages to embody the terms "tightly wound" and "teen angst," and his subtly twitchy mannerisms made me tense whenever hs was on screen. The cinematography is good, and the film makes effective use of creepy sets like a Victorian mansion with a claustrophobically small hidden staircase. Those (like me) interested in the nuts and bolts of low budget filmmaking will enjoy the special features, which document how a pair of novice screenwriters salvaged a well-shot but badly-written film by reformulating the screenplay and seemlessly melding existing footage with additional shooting done on the cheap. |
