Hong Kong legend Tsui Hark brings you this tale of high-kicking vampire action. A quartet of kung fu masters trained in the Taoist Mao Shan School of magic are on the hunt for zombie vampires in 19th century China. | I saw the preview for this movie before I watched the Vampire Effect. Looked good. Man was I wrong. The completely destroyed the myth of the vampire! Making it into a little less then a suped up Mummy. The actions scence were good when they were there but other then that it was a complete wasted of time!!! So stay away. |

This movie, when it was released in Hong Kong as Era Of Vampires may have been good. I'll never know, since the disc released in the US by Columbia/Tri-Star removes 20 minutes of footage. Most reviewers complain that the plot makes no sense or that characters appear and disappear without reason. This is true, but only because some US suit did a hackjob on the film.
In the remaining mess, there are some glimmers of an entertaining film. The 4 titular hunters have some brief comedic moments as hired help and the visuals are magnificent, as they are in many Tsui Hark-produced movies.
Those looking for a repeat of Hark's earlier Chinese Ghost Story films should steer clear. This is more of a haunted version of Crouching Tiger, even to the point of using some of the same fight locations and music. But Vampire Hunters is decidedly lower-rent than Ang Lee's big-budget brawler. The effects are typical of a made for Sci-Fi Channel movie and the vampires lack the personality of the earlier Chinese vampire films.
I don't think the missing 20 minutes would make this film a masterpece, but I'm sure it would make it less nonsensical. |

| I've been a fan of Tsui Hark's for years, but man this was bad! Hopping monsters, people, hopping monsters. This plot was so convoluted and nonsensical I barely finished the movie at all. Pick almost anything else of Tsui's and you'll be much better off. |
