In this classic martial arts adventure (which, incidentally, isn't actually a sequel to Five Deadly Venoms, though it features many of the same actors), Tu Tin-To (Chen Kuan-Tai) and his son (Lu Feng) are unscrupulous warlords drunk with power who will cripple anyone who crosses their path. Five men who have fallen victim to the violence of Tu Tin-To and his son band together -- a blind man (Phillip Kwok Tsui), a deaf-mute (Lo Meng), a man with no legs (Sun Chien), a man who has been rendered an imbecile through torture (Chiang Sheng), and a gifted kung-fu master. The master teaches the four maimed men deadly fighting skills, and they set forth to reclaim their village from Tu Tin-To's reign of terror. Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms, originally titled Can Que, was also released as Crippled Avengers. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

| this one is close to perfect. A bloody cycle of vengaence wuxia flick repleate with dismemberment, social and familial humiliation, amazingly acrobatic kung fu, and, of course, alot of flagrant homoeroticsm--- all shot on what appears to be 2 sound stages at a shaw bros. studio backlot. the plotline is delriously standard issue revenge. a son has his arms graphically cut off by his father's rivals; daddy makes him a pair of go-go gadget metal arms. the son uses these stylish new arms to cripple a bunch of people, who then learn kung fu to kick everyones ass. What really sets this film apart is the talents of director chang cheh, who specialized in smouldering martial arts melodramas wherein limbs are constantly being chopped off(and who mentored both Jimmy Wang Yu and John Woo) and fight choreographer Lar Kar leung, who believes in strict fidelity to martial art forms (and whose own "8-diagram Pole Fighter" is equally impressive). Put together, you have a florid soap opera that would make tennesse williams blush in the service of breath-taking action sequences. What more do you want? |
