| black & white, so fitting for the texture of the film. Stark contrasts can be achieved without much effort and yet the effects are mind-numbing. Did I cry? Of course I did. Will you? If you let this film run it's course you probably will too. Just reading the subtitles gave me a only a hint of the actual dialog but I don't think I missed much, neither will you, it's all written in the faces, gestures and the slow panning of the camera captures it all. If you're a fan of vintage Swedish Films, this Danish Jewel will sparkle for you. |

| I have only recently discovered Dreyer, and am now trying to catch up on as much of his work as I can. What a gorgeous, moving, surprising film. Romantic in the best sense of the word and just telling the story to someone yesterday brought us both to tears. A tender, moving film - and beautiful to look at, luminous - as it should be. |
