New on DVD

An excellent mix of titles out today, including several winners from (natch) Criterion, a couple of 'toons, blaxploitation, a hair doc, and Audrey Tautou -- what's not to like?

Whether it's because it was a massive DVD release week last week or because the Groundhog saw his shadow, whatever the reason it's a fairly slight week for DVDs this week, but still some good stuff, especially in the horror department.

A most excellent assortment of films out on DVD today, including two very underrated films by women directors, several choice offerings from Criterion, Canadian horror, Michael Jackson, Grindhouse, and more. Check it out.

Even with the relative quiet of the holiday season, there are a number of intriguing releases out over the next couple of weeks -- comedies (romantic and workplace), sci-fi/action, two already cult-ish horror flicks, a music doc and more. See some of the titles coming soon. And happy holidays!

As award season rolls around, it's nice to look back at the indie gems released this year that deserve a little spotlight, too. To do just that, indieWire released their list, Best Undistributed Films from their Annual Critics Survey 2009. On that list is GreenCine favorite Harmony and Me, now available on DVD along with writer-director Bob Byington's previous feature, RSO: Registered Sex Offender.

A fun release week as we approach the holiday quiet period. QT does WWII as only he can,a couple of internatiional sleepers and, hey, any week offering 2 films featuring Zach Galiafiankis can't be all bad.

Some excellent titles out this week -- it sounds a cliche but there really is something for all tastes and interests, from the boy wizard to anime, gangsters to chefs, Dillinger to a documentary with a real porpoise (sorry). A good week, and some good stuff coming soon as well.
